Why you don’t need to be a tech expert to nail email marketing

But knowing one helps

If the words “email marketing” get your pulse racing, for all the wrong reasons, you are not

alone. For many solopreneurs, especially us Gen-X perimenopausal ladies, tech can feel like a foreign language.

You might be thinking, “I’m great at what I do, but tech just isn’t my thing.” Sound familiar? Deep breath: you don’t need to be a tech whizz to master email marketing. In fact, you’re probably already a lot closer than you think. Afterall, you made 2 reels last week didn’t you?

My aim is to make brilliant people like you, yes you, feel confident and in control of your digital tools, especially email. Here’s why your lack of tech prowess isn’t the obstacle you think it is and how to just bloody do it anyway.

1. Good Email Marketing Is About People, Not Platforms

Let’s start with a truth nobody shouts loud enough: technology is just the delivery van; you are the driver, it’s your message. Your subscribers are people with inboxes flooded by boring, robotic emails and what they want is connection, warmth, usefulness.

That bit is all about you, the stories you tell, the advice you share, and your unique voice. If you care about your clients and know how to help them, you already have most of what you need.

2. The Tools Are More User-Friendly Than Ever

Gone are the days when email platforms looked like cockpit dashboards. Services like

MailerLite (my favourite) are designed for non-techy humans. Yes, even the ones who feel bewildered by anything more complicated than WhatsApp.

Setting up lists, drag-and-drop templates and sending a campaign can all be done without reading a manual, or referring to 25 YouTube tutorials. Trust me when I say, if you can use social media, you can master your email platform.

3. Mistakes Happen And That’s Okay

It’s normal.

Worried you’ll send the wrong thing to the wrong people? Sacred to press “send” and trigger a digital disaster? Yep, me too sometimes.

We all have a “horror” story or two to share, but the thing is…most mistakes are fixable and almost never fatal. Your readers are far more forgiving than you think, especially if you own it and move on. Like the time it took me THREE emails to send the right link for a newly launched offer out. Perfection isn’t the goal, connection is.

4. Support Is Available (And It’s Okay to Ask)

You don’t have to struggle alone. Getting lost in jargon or temporarily mispacing your marbles over a tricky automation isn’t a sign to jack it all in. Services like ‘Email Hours’, my free YouTube channel or MailerLite knowledge base can all help.

5. Compliance Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

One of the biggest worries for solopreneurs is accidentally tripping up over GDPR, PECR or

data privacy. The good news is that with the right guidance, keeping your emails compliant isn’t some mysterious art and you don’t need a law degree.

My tips for staying on the right side of data compliance are:

  • Use sign up forms rather than manually adding people to your list - consent is best.
  • Make your Privacy Notice available to subscribers at the point of sign up.
  • Check to see if you need to register with the Information Commissioners Office (ICO):

6. Progress Over Perfection Wins Every Time

Nobody started as an expert, not even the so-called experts. Every successful business owner you see confidently scheduling campaigns has clicked “undo” a few times and googled, “What does this button mean?”

It’s not being a secret tech genius that got them there, it’s from starting simple and taking one step at a time and letting your confidence grow from there. Celebrate the small wins, the first campaign sent, the first reply, the first automaton that actually works. Each is a milestone and deserves a biscuit (insert reward of choice).

How to Get Started—No Tech Degree Required

If you’re itching to finally get cracking, here’s a checklist you can start today:

  • Start small: Pick one platform (we recommend MailerLite if you want something simple yet powerful). Create a list, design a basic template, and send a quick update to your clients. Don’t overthink it.
  • Make it human: Share a story, tip, or question—something that actually sounds like you. Readers respond when it feels real, not robotic.
  • Ask for help: Book a supportive session (like the Email hour, a 66-minute rescue) if you get stuck—there’s no medal for muddling through alone.
  • Stay curious: Google is your friend, and most email platforms have step-by-step guides built-in. Celebrate each time you do something new, no matter how small.

Final Thoughts

You might never love tech for tech’s sake and that’s totally fine, it keeps me in a job! What matters is using it as a tool to build authentic connections and grow your fabulous business. Every time you show up in someone’s inbox with genuine value, you’re winning at email marketing and every tech wobble is just another step in your journey.

This post is written with MailerLite in mind as that is what we do (it’s just me, there is no we).
