Here’s something I believe after years of helping small business owners with their tech.
You're not bad at tech.
If you’ve convinced yourself you’re “not technical”, I’m willing to bet that’s because you’ve expected yourself to learn software by piecing together YouTube videos, blog posts and tutorials that all assume you already know the basics.
No wonder it feels overwhelming.
I don’t believe anyone is bad at tech. I think most people just haven’t had someone explain how the pieces fit together.
So, how did I end up here?
Back in 2020, I started my business as a virtual assistant, supporting freelancers and small business owners with the day-to-day running of their businesses.
It didn’t take long before I became the person everyone came to with the jobs they’d been putting off. The forms, automations, integrations and email triggers. The backend systems that made people silently (or not) scream to themselves.
The weird thing was, I loved it. Not because I enjoy facing off against complex software, but because I love untangling it.
I’ve always been happiest taking something that feels messy or overwhelming and turning it into a simple, logical process.
So, how did I end up here?

After hundreds of conversations with clients, I realised something.
People weren’t struggling because they were disorganised, or because they weren’t clever enough, or even because the software was particularly difficult. They were struggling because nobody had ever sat down with them and explained how everything connects.
Almost every conversation started the same way.
“I’m so embarrassed.”
“I’ve probably made a mess of it.”
“This is probably a stupid question.”
It never was and it never is.
That’s why I created What the Tech.
What the Tech is my jargon-free corner of the internet for freelancers, solopreneurs and founder-led businesses who want email marketing to work without feeling overwhelmed by the technology behind it. Who want to be able to create a new product or service and have the tech talk to each other without manual updates or 3am panics that something didn’t do what it’s supposed to.
What it’s like to work with me
You won't be left in the dark, and you won't be handed a black box either. I talk you through the why as well as the how, so you actually understand your own systems by the time we're finished.
Some projects I build start to finish, others we tackle together, screen-share and all. Whichever way we work, you'll come away more confident than when we started, and if an automation ever goes rogue, I've got you.
A little bit about me
I live on the island of Hoy in Orkney with my husband, our rescue dog, Kiki and four hens.
When I’m not untangling email systems you’ll usually find me out walking, reading, attempting to grow things, swimming in cold water or learning something completely new myself.
Because that’s the thing about technology, and life in general. None of us starts out knowing what we’re doing, we learn.
