What a “Good Enough” Email Setup Actually Looks Like

The myth of the “perfect” system

When it comes to emails, there’s this idea that you need the full works: a glossy lead magnet, a beautiful landing page, multiple welcome sequences, segmentation, automations that do three cartwheels and a handshake before sending out a newsletter.

You don’t.

If you are doing that, brilliant, you’re not wrong, but most of the people I work with don’t want to run a tech circus. They want to feel confident that their set-up works so that when someone signs up, something actually happens.

They want to trust their system enough that they can go back to focusing on their actual work, whether that’s coaching clients, doing a photo shoot, running workshops, or finally updating their ‘About’ page. They want to stop avoiding it and feeling like a tech failure every time they try to figure it out.

What “good enough” actually looks like

Let’s demystify this. A good enough setup isn’t flashy, it’s functional.

Here’s what it needs:

  • A lead magnet or simple reason to join your list
  • A landing page or sign-up form that’s live, working and links to your email platform
  • A welcome email (or short sequence) that feels and sounds like you, not some ‘plug and play’ template
  • An automation that connects the dots
  • A way to send campaigns when you’re ready, ideally without swearing

That’s it, no 12-step funnel, no colour-coded tags and no £300-a-month software price-tag. Unless you have eleventy billion subscribers, then it’s probably worth it.

What you really need is a clear, working path that helps people find you, get value from you and stay in touch.

The goal isn’t perfection.

You need to give yourself permission to start before it’s all mapped out, permission to tweak instead of rebuilding and permission to send emails even if your welcome sequence only has one email in it right now. That’s down to you – you can give yourself permission right now.

Every single tidy, automated, nurturing email system started with someone clicking create new form – you can do that. But you know where I am if you don’t want to right?!

What might your version look like?

Maybe you have a brilliant freebie but no automation yet. Perhaps you have a half-written welcome sequence lurking somewhere in your documents. Or, you might just be getting the side eye from MailerLite (other platforms available) because you haven’t logged in since 2024.

That’s okay. I say that a lot, this isn’t about doing it all overnight. It’s about understanding what the pieces are and how they can fit together to make your life easier.

Start with one connection

One form that sends one email, one landing page that feels like your voice or one automation that means you don’t have to manually send your freebie every time someone signs up.

Small steps = real progress.

And if you’re ready for some support?

In Ocober, I’m running a live course designed for freelancers, solopreneurs, and service-based business owners who want to finally get their email setup sorted — without the jargon, overwhelm or endless tutorials.

We’ll work together to create:

  • A working lead magnet delivery system
  • Your landing page and opt-in forms
  • A simple welcome sequence and automation
  • Your first email campaign

It’s designed to be small, supportive, and human — just like the people it’s for.

If that sounds like something you might need, jump onto my mailing list. I also have a free guide to get you started on creating your content and pulling all your ideas together before you even go anywhere near the tech!

For now? Let “good enough” be your starting point

You don’t need a full system. You just need a working one.
And that’s more than enough.
